With Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, the collaboration between Magic and Marvel takes a much darker turn in 2027. Instead of putting classic superheroes center stage, this Universes Beyond set revolves around magic, gods, vampires, demons, and the supernatural side of the Marvel Universe.
At the center is the Darkhold, one of the most dangerous magical books in the Marvel world. A page from the book falls into the wrong hands and destabilizes the boundaries between different dimensions. Dormammu and Hela harness the power of the Darkhold, while characters like Doctor Strange, Thor, and Magik are drawn into the new story.
Darkhold Destiny releases worldwide on April 9, 2027. As an official WPN Store, we can offer you the products at cardcosmos as part of WPN Early Access starting at Prerelease on April 2, 2027. It’s also particularly interesting that Wizards of the Coast and Marvel have developed a completely new story together for this set for the first time. So the set isn’t simply a Collection of familiar comic moments, but tells its own story within the Marvel Universe.
In this article, you’ll get a detailed overview of MTG Marvel Darkhold Destiny, the story, characters and cards already revealed, the Commander decks, special card variants, and, of course, the set’s various products.
What is Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny?
Marvel: Darkhold Destiny is a Universes Beyond set from Magic: The Gathering and the first Marvel Magic set for which Marvel and the Wizards narrative team have jointly developed a completely new story.
The story leads deep into the mystical side of the Marvel Universe. Sorcery, vampires, gods, demons, and other supernatural beings are much more prominent than classic superhero teams. This gives Darkhold Destiny a very different atmosphere from previous Marvel releases.
The Darkhold serves as the starting point for the story. Dormammu and Hela combine their power with a page from the forbidden book and tear open the boundaries between realities. This connects different dimensions and unleashes supernatural threats.
Wizards describes the set as a journey through areas of the Marvel universe that have barely been explored before. The Dark Dimension, among other things, is set to play a role. At the same time, Marvel gods, powerful sorcerers, and other supernatural characters clash.

The comic is scheduled for digital release in February 2027, with the print edition to follow in April 2027. The story is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly.
The Darkhold is at the center of the new story
The Darkhold is one of the best-known magical objects in the Marvel universe. The book contains dangerous knowledge of dark magic and has repeatedly been linked over the years to characters such as Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, and various demonic forces.
In Darkhold Destiny, this dangerous power becomes the starting point for a story spanning multiple dimensions. One page of the Darkhold is enough to damage the boundaries between realities.
Dormammu and Hela are on the dark side of the conflict. As ruler of the realm of the dead, Hela is closely associated with death and the underworld, while Dormammu is one of Doctor Strange’s most powerful mystical adversaries and is closely tied to the Dark Dimension.
This combination gives the set a clear direction. Instead of simply packing as many Marvel characters as possible into an expansion, Darkhold Destiny focuses on characters whose themes align with magic, the underworld, vampires, gods, and supernatural threats.
Doctor Strange, Thor, and Magik are among the central characters
On the other side of the conflict are Doctor Strange and Thor, among others. Both fit the set’s theme very well for different reasons. Doctor Strange is one of the most important sorcerers in the Marvel universe, while Thor represents the divine side of the story.
Magik, Illyana Rasputin has also been officially revealed for Darkhold Destiny. Her ability to travel between places and dimensions using her stepping discs fits especially well with a story in which the boundaries between different realities collapse.
Cards already revealed include The Darkhold, Hela, Mistress of Darkness, Magik, Illyana Rasputin, Rise from the Nether, and Gargantos, the Endbringer. However, the complete card list is still far from known.
That’s why it’s worth holding back on early predictions about the set’s strongest cards here, too. But one thing is already clear: Wizards is planning a broad mix of heroes, villains, gods, and supernatural creatures.
Four Commander decks for Marvel Darkhold Destiny
For Commander fans, Darkhold Destiny is especially exciting. Four different Commander decks are being released: Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, Gods of Asgard, and Strange Academy.
Each Deck explores a different part of the Marvel universe and brings its own gameplay concept.
Lords of Hel
Lords of Hel puts Hela and the powers of the underworld at center stage. According to the product information released so far, the Deck works with tokens and sacrifice effects. The idea is to keep creating creatures and then sacrifice them for powerful effects.
At cardcosmos, you'll find the Lords of Hel Commander Deck in German as well as the Lords of Hel Commander Deck in English.
Midnight Sons
The Midnight Sons are among Marvel's best-known groups in the supernatural realm. In Darkhold Destiny, the Deck is associated with Blade and vampires, among others. Gameplay revolves around life totals, gaining life, and then using your own life force for powerful effects.
There is also the Midnight Sons Commander Deck German and the Midnight Sons Commander Deck English.
Gods of Asgard
Gods of Asgard revolves around Thor and the powerful inhabitants of Asgard. Based on the information available so far, the focus is on creatures with high power and building as much power as possible on your battlefield.
For fans of Thor and Asgard, there is the Gods of Asgard Commander Deck German as well as the Gods of Asgard Commander Deck English.
Strange Academy
The fourth Deck is called Strange Academy and focuses on Doctor Strange and other magic users. Gameplay centers on spellcasters and effects that remove creatures from the battlefield and then bring them back. This allows enter-the-battlefield abilities to be used multiple times.
We offer the Deck as Strange Academy Commander Deck German and as Strange Academy Commander Deck English.
If you'd like all four decks at once, you can also get the Darkhold Destiny Commander Deck Set German and the Commander Deck Set English.
Collector's Edition Commander decks for Collectors
All four Commander decks are also available as a Collector's Edition. These are also complete 100-card decks, but the cards are in Surge Foil. This makes these versions particularly appealing to Commander Players who also value a premium collector's version of their deck.
The English Collector's Editions are available as Lords of Hel Collector's Edition, Midnight Sons Collector's Edition, Gods of Asgard Collector's Edition, and Strange Academy Collector's Edition.
Anyone looking to collect all four premium decks at once can also find them together in the Collector's Edition Commander Deck Set.
Booster packs and Booster displays for Marvel Darkhold Destiny
Regular Booster packs are the classic entry point to the main set and are designed for Limited formats such as Draft and Sealed. A Booster contains 14 Magic cards, while a complete Booster Display consists of 30 packs.
If you’d like to open individual packs, there’s the Marvel Darkhold Destiny Booster German and the Darkhold Destiny Booster English.
For larger openings or Draft games, you can also find the Darkhold Destiny Booster Display German and the Booster Display English.
As an official WPN Store, we can also offer you these regular Darkhold Destiny products as part of WPN Early Access starting April 2, 2027. So you don’t have to wait until the regular Release on April 9 to get started with the new set at cardcosmos.
Collector Booster and special card variants
Collectors will be especially interested in the Collector Booster. Darkhold Destiny features several special card designs that tie into the set’s comic and Mystery theme.
Wizards has announced, among other things, Source Material cards, Silver Foil cards, and the new Midnight Raised Foil treatment. These variants are set to make up the premium section of the set.
Source Material cards are likely to be particularly exciting for Marvel fans because they are more closely based on the original comic material. Silver Foil brings a different metallic look to the set, while Midnight Raised Foil is used for special team-ups and selected cards.
Anyone looking to open individual premium packs can find the Darkhold Destiny Collector Booster German as well as the Collector Booster English.
For a bigger Collectors opening, there is the Collector Booster Display German and the Collector Booster Display English. A Booster Display contains 12 Collector Booster.
The regular Bundle and the Arcanum Bundle
Darkhold Destiny also offers different options in its Bundles.
The regular Bundle contains 9 Booster packs, a mechanically unique Mythic Rare promo card, five full-art basic lands with Strange Places artwork, an oversized Spindown life counter, and other Accessories.
It appears as the Marvel Darkhold Destiny Bundle German and as the Darkhold Destiny Bundle English.
The Marvel Darkhold Destiny Arcanum Bundle English goes a step further. It contains eight regular Boosters, one Collector Booster, full-art Bifrost lands, special Arcanum promo cards with exclusive illustrations, a Spindown, and other Accessories.
This makes the Arcanum Bundle more appealing to Marvel Collectors who want exclusive promo cards and special lands from the set in addition to boosters.
Two Scene Boxes tell parts of the story
Darkhold Destiny continues the Scene Boxes familiar from other Universes Beyond sets. Several cards placed side by side form a larger illustration while also depicting a specific moment from the story.
The Skirmish at the Sanctum Scene Box includes six borderless Scene Cards. Together, they depict the chaos on Bleecker Street as Doctor Strange defends the Sanctum Sanctorum.
In contrast, the Assault on Asgard Scene Box depicts another pivotal moment in the story and, according to Wizards, is even intended to serve as the grand finale of the Darkhold Destiny story.
For Collectors, Scene Boxes are especially appealing because the cards can be played individually while also combining to form a cohesive piece of artwork.
Draft Night and Prerelease
Those who want to play Darkhold Destiny right away, rather than just collect it, can also choose from several products.
The Marvel Darkhold Destiny Draft Night Box is designed for four Players and includes everything needed for a Pick-Two Draft. As an added incentive, the winner even gets a Collector Booster.
The Prerelease runs from April 2 to 8, 2027. For it, there's the Darkhold Destiny Prerelease Pack German and the Prerelease Pack English.
A Prerelease Pack contains six Boosters, a traditional Foil promo card of Rarity Rare or Mythic Rare, a spindown life counter, and additional materials for the Sealed event.
This date is especially important for cardcosmos: As an official Wizards Play Network Store, we participate in WPN Early Access. This means Darkhold Destiny products may already be available from us starting April 2, 2027, one week before the regular worldwide Release.
Why Darkhold Destiny is especially interesting for Marvel fans
The biggest difference from many other Universes Beyond sets is the new story. Darkhold Destiny doesn't simply adapt a familiar movie or comic into Magic cards.
Instead, Marvel and Wizards have developed a story specifically for this Magic set. This allows characters to meet who otherwise wouldn't simply have to retell a specific comic issue in this form.
This gives the set more freedom. Dormammu and Hela can become the central threat together, Doctor Strange and Thor take on important roles, and characters like Magik fit naturally into the cross-dimensional storyline.
The announced Marvel comic further reinforces this approach. Those who want to follow the full story can experience it through the comic, the cards, and the Scene Boxes.
What makes Darkhold Destiny exciting for Magic Players?
The set also offers some interesting ideas for Magic Players beyond Marvel. Marvel’s supernatural characters are generally a good fit for many familiar Magic mechanics. Vampires, gods, demons, spellcasters, and creatures from other dimensions translate naturally into existing card types and deck strategies.
A clear separation between themes is already apparent in Commander. Hela focuses on sacrifice and tokens, Blade on vampires and life points, Thor on high power, and Doctor Strange on spellcasters and repeated enter-the-battlefield effects.
The full decklists are needed before these strategies can be properly assessed. However, the product descriptions released so far show that Wizards has deliberately given the four Commander decks very different builds.
What makes the set interesting to Collectors?
For Collectors, Darkhold Destiny is likely to be one of the most eye-catching Magic sets of 2027. Marvel already brings a large cast of well-known characters, while this set focuses on a realm that offers plenty of visual possibilities.
Dark magic, the Dark Dimension, Asgard, vampires, mystical artifacts, and comic elements lend themselves to striking illustrations. There are also Source Material cards, Silver Foils, and Midnight Raised Foils.
The Scene Boxes, exclusive Bundle promo cards, and Surge Foil versions of the Collector's Edition Commander decks also expand the selection well beyond the main set’s regular cards.
It’s still too early to reliably say which cards will ultimately become the biggest chase cards. The complete card gallery hasn’t been released yet. That’s why it’s best to be cautious about early price predictions or supposedly guaranteed top pulls.

Darkhold Destiny reveals the dark side of the Marvel universe
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny is quite different from a classic superhero crossover. The set focuses on magic, gods, vampires, demons, and other supernatural aspects of the Marvel universe.
With Dormammu and Hela as the central threats, Doctor Strange, Thor, and Magik on the other side, and a completely new story, the set has a clear identity of its own. What’s especially exciting is that the story doesn’t just unfold on the cards, but is expanded through a Marvel comic and the two Scene Boxes.
The product range is extensive, too. Regular Booster packs and Displays appeal to Players and set collectors, while Collector Booster, Arcanum Bundle, and Collector's Edition Commander decks are much more focused on special card variants and Collectors. Commander fans get four clearly distinct strategies with Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, Gods of Asgard, and Strange Academy.
The worldwide Release is on April 9, 2027. However, as customers of an official WPN Store, you can get access to the products at cardcosmos as early as the Prerelease on April 2, 2027. Many more cards and details will be revealed before then. But even now, it’s clear that Marvel Darkhold Destiny is likely to become one of the most expansive and narratively unusual Universes Beyond sets from Magic: The Gathering.
